HS: Winter SIMA FAB 50 rankings, Jan. 6
It's approaching midseason for most winter high school teams, but the next two weeks will go a long way in determining the likely frontrunners for the final SIMA FAB 50 Winter No. 1.
This week, the National Elite Prep Showcase in Fort Worth, Texas, highlights the girls schedule and brings together top girls teams from California, Florida and Texas. The immediate fallout from the three-day event, which starts Thursday, will be thinning out the logjam of Texas teams in the current SIMA FAB 50 Top 10. By week's end, it is likely that at least three of the current seven Texas teams in the girls Top 10 will have tasted defeat, allowing for upward movement by California and Florida programs ranked 11-25. In addition, NEPS is the proving ground for the visiting teams from Florida and California. A strong showings by out-of-state opponents not only will make a statement for that program, but also other highly ranked teams in their area. Of course, a losing record at the event will have the opposite effect -- making the SIMA FAB 50 even more heavily skewed toward the California and Texas programs.
Looking ahead, Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) will play host to its annual Montverde Academy Soccer Tournament next week, and another title by the host team will secure the SIMA FAB 50 winter No. 1 ranking for the season. The MAST features nationally ranked teams from Arizona, California, Florida and Texas. Like NEPS, results from the three-day MAST, which starts Jan. 15, will have a major influence on future SIMA FAB 50 rankings.
